General Therapies at Ashwini: A Glance

Uzhichil - Simple oil massage (Whole body massage with medicated oil)

Kizhi - Massage with herbal leaves and herbal powders filled in linen pouches. Special Kizhi is administered for spinal cord related problems caused by accidents.

Pizhichil – A unique method of applying warm medicated oil all over the body; synchronised with complete body massage.

Indications: Recommended for neurological problems and Arthritis. It is highly effective and recommended in rejuvenation therapy that helps control aging, improve complexion, and remove wrinkles and scales.

Navara Kizhi - - Massage with Navara rice (medicinal rice) cooked in cow milk and decoctions, and filled in linen pouches. Whole body massage with navara is recommended as post-treatment to pizhichil.

Indications: Highly rejuvenating and tension relieving. It cures neurological ailments, rheumatic disorder, muscular wasting, lethargy and all types of degenerative illness.

PODIKKIZHI
Podikkizi (Choorna Swedam)- Therapeutic sweating of the body with the help of herbal powders and medicines wrapped in linen pouches; applied at moderate heat to sweat the body.

Indications: Remedy for Vata and Kapha disorders.

Ilakkizhi (Patra Sewedam)- - Sudation therapy with herbal leaves wrapped in linen pouches along with other medicines.

Indications: Effective in rheumatic pains and swollen joints

DHARA
Dhara - Pouring steady stream of medicated oil or decoctions to the affected area. Different types of dhara are in practice to treat various illnesses as explained below. Thaila dhara (with oil) is one of the major oil therapies.

Shirodhara - Medicated oil is gently poured in a continuous stream on the forehead of the patient, as decided by the physician based on the ailment.

Indications: Tone up brain and improve memory. Effective for neurological disorders, epilepsy, Insomnia, migraine, Parkinson etc.

Thakra Dhara - Buttermilk is used in place of oil and applied on affected areas in a steady stream or in an incessant application.

Indication: Skin diseases, depression, insomnia etc.

Ksheera Dhara – Milk is used as the medium in ksheera dhara; Milk added with decoction prepared from various herbs is gently poured in a continuous stream on the affected area.

Indication: Depression and related illnesses.

Dhanyamla Dhara- It is a very special dhara using dhanyamlam, a liquid prepared from cereals and vinegar in a strenuous process that takes many of days to complete.

Indication: Recommended in vata related ailments.

Netra Dhara- Application of herbal extracts into the eyes in a gentle and continuous stream to treat various eye diseases, and visual disorders.

Tharpanam: Retention of medicated oil or ghee over the eye balls.

Indication: Prevents cataract and improves eye sight by strengthening the optic nerve.

Vasthy – A process of retaining medicated oil or decoctions over the affected area. This is the most effective treatment in Ayurveda. Different types of Vasthy are performed for different ailments.

Sirovasthy – A unique method of holding medicated oil over the scalp with the help of leather cap fixed around the head.

Indication: Facial paralysis, spondilytis, memory loss and eye problems.

Kashayavasthy-Therapeutic enema: introduction of decoctions trough rectum and retaining it in the stomach for a specific duration.

KATI VASTI
Indications: Severe back pain, spinal problems.

Kati Vasthy: Retention of oil at the lower back.

Indication: Treatment of inter vertebral disc prolapse, sciatica and lower back ache.


NASYAM
Nasyam: Application of herbal extracts or medicated oil/ghee through nostrils

Indication: Helps in prana disorders, sinus congestion, migraine, headache, convulsions and certain eye and ear problems. Nasyam helps to improve breathing. It is also effective in chronic headache, migraine, throat diseases, memory loss, insomnia, facial paralysis and problems related to eyesight.
